Virginia Johnson

BA Fordham University

is a native of Washington DC where she began her studies with Therrell Smith. She is a graduate of the Academy of the Washington School of Ballet. After a year as University Scholar at New York University she became a founding member of Dance Theatre of Harlem. As a principal dancer with the company she performed in such ballets as Concerto Barocco, Allegro Brilliant, Agon, A Streetcar Named Desire, Fall River legend, Swan Lake, Giselle, Voluntaries, Les Biches, and other ballets. She danced with the company for twenty-seven years. Her television credits include A Streetcar Named Desire for PBS, Creole Giselle for NBC, and Fall River Legend for Danmarks radio. She also participated in Margot Fonteyn's televisionon series 'The Magic of Dance' and was included in Makarova's series 'Ballerina.

Virginia Johnson has received numerous honors, including a Young Achiever Award(1986) from the national Council of Women, Outstanding Young Woman of America(1984), and in 1991 she was presented with the Dance Magazine Award. Ms. Johnson has appeared as a guest artist in The Nutcraker with the Washington Ballet, the Urban Youth Ballet in Baltimore, the Eugene Ballet and the Detroit Symphony. Internationally, she has toured Australia with 'Stars of World Ballet,' been a guest artist at three International Festivals of Dance in Havana. Cuba and danced the title role of Giselle in Giselle with the Nacional Ballet de Cuba and the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House, London. She has danced at the White House for Presidents Carter and Reagan. Ms. Johnson has a BA in journalism from Fordham University,and is currently Editor-in-Chief of Pointe Magazine.
