Interview and Audition Information
Marymount Manhattan College is a distinctive liberal arts college on Manhattan's Upper East Side. We take great pride in our excellent theatre education and training offered within a liberal arts curriculum. Our theatre classes in acting, design, directing, dramaturgy, playwriting, producing and stage management are small in size (an average of 12 students each) with focused personal attention. All in the great theatre city of New York!
All Theatre Arts applicants must interview and/or audition with the Theatre Arts faculty to be admitted into the BA in Theatre Arts or BFA in Acting programs. The Admissions Office of the College must receive your admissions application to the College at least three weeks prior to your scheduled interview or audition, in order for you to interview or audition for Theatre Arts. Your admissions file for the College does not need to be completed with transcripts, test scores, essays, and recommendations, but the application must be received for a prospective student to be interviewed and/or auditioned for Theatre Arts. An online MMC admissions application is available on the Admissions web page.
Based on your audition or interview and your academic record and family need, Competitive Scholarships may be awarded in both the BA in Theatre Arts and the BFA in Acting. The range of these Competitive Scholarships is currently $1,000 to $4,000 per year. Your admissions file to the College must be completed in the Admissions Office by March 15 to be considered for a Competitive Scholarship. Any admissions file completed after this date will be considered for a Competitive Scholarship based on remaining funds available. No additional written application is required for Competitive Scholarships.
Interviews and auditions are scheduled at the College as well as regionally. The interview and audition information on this web page applies to interviews and auditions conducted at the College, those held in other cities may be conducted with different formats. Please call or e-mail us for specific information. To schedule an interview and/or audition, please complete the Online Interview/Audition Form. You may also call Theatre Admissions at (212) 774-0767 or e-mail Theatre.
- Prospective students for the concentrations in Design & Technical Production and Producing & Management in the BA in Theatre Arts are interviewed by faculty on Fridays, the day before scheduled Saturday interview/audition dates. Students should present portfolios, prompt books, photographs, drawings, models and other appropriate support materials. They are invited to attend Friday design and producing classes, and may also attend the Theatre Arts information session on Saturday afternoon.
- Prospective students interested in the BA in Theatre Arts with concentrations in Directing, Theatre Studies or Writing for the Stage are interviewed by faculty on the Saturday interview/audition dates. Students should bring rehearsal scripts, prompt books, research, writing samples, photographs and other support materials. Students interested in Directing must participate in the Acting Audition.
- Acting Auditions for the BFA in Acting and BA in Theatre Arts with a concentration in Theatre Performance are held on the Saturday interview/audition dates. These auditions are for both programs. Please decide by the day of your audition if you wish to be considered for only the BFA in Acting, only the Theatre Performance concentration of the BA in Theatre Arts, or for both programs. Acting Auditions are conducted as a sample class and consist of three parts: a vocal and physical warm-up, presentations of prepared monologues, and an informal interview with the Theatre Arts faculty and other auditionees. Please dress nicely, but in attire in which you can move freely. Prospective students must present one 2-minute contemporary (written after 1945) monologue that best demonstrates their abilities. Audition material must be selected from published plays or film scripts; please do not audition with original material. Choose a monologue that you connect with personally and that demonstrates your abilities. Do not prepare monologues that are caricature or extremely broad comedy, or material that requires an accent. If you need suggestions, consult the enclosed list of recommended monologues or telephone Theatre Admissions for advice. Pictures and resumes are recommended but are not required.
- Students interested in the Musical Theatre Minor participate in Musical Theatre Auditions on the Saturday interview/audition dates. These auditions are also conducted as a sample class. Please prepare an up-tempo and a ballad from the standard musical theatre repertoire - no pop operas or rock tunes. Prepare both songs in their entirety, however, you will probably sing from only one. Knowing two complete songs means that you have more prepared if the faculty needs to hear additional material. Please prepare a 16 bar cut from each song. For sopranos, the 16 bar cut should show your best vocal range and personality, your "best self." For belters, the 16 bar cut should show how high you can belt (your money note), and the choice should reflect your "best self." Same for baritones and tenors, if you have two voices in which you can sing, we need you to prepare two songs. Although you need to know the two songs in their entirety, please realize that you will probably only present the prepared 16 bar cuts. The Musical Theatre Audition is not simply "testing voices" - we are looking at the entire performance of the selection (remember that acting counts!) An accompanist is provided; please bring sheet music. Audition tapes are not allowed. Students must be admitted to the BA in Theatre Arts with a concentration in Theatre Performance to pursue the Musical Theatre Minor.
- All prospective students and their families are invited to attend the information sessions about our Theatre Arts programs that are offered at each of the Saturday interview/audition dates. At these sessions faculty present an overview of the College and Theatre Arts programs, and answer your questions.
Prospective students unable to travel to New York or to a regional interview date interested in Design & Technical Production, Producing & Management, Theatre Studies, or Writing for the Stage may mail a portfolio to Theatre Admissions, and a telephone interview will be arranged.
For an appointment to meet with a Theatre Arts representative, to visit a class or for additional information, please call Theatre Admissions at (212) 774-0767 or e-mail Theatre.
