Request for Proposals

The Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at MarymountManhattan College(MMC) recently received funding from the Department of Education to establish the Geraldine Ferraro Center for Education Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics. A portion of these funds are dedicated to support collaborative science research projects between students and science teachers from New York City area High Schools and science faculty at MMC.

We are requesting proposals for small high school science research projects which will be devised by high school students and their science teachers under the guidance of selected science faculty at MMC. Projects can be in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics, environmental chemistry, mathematics, speech pathology, and psychology. A list of MMC science faculty and their areas of expertise is attached (Appendix A). Each proposal may request up to $500 for materials and supplies. The project may utilize equipment, instrumentation, technology and lab spaces available at the MMC Geraldine Ferraro Center for Education Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics, if necessary. The project also may be conducted in part or wholly at the home institution (NYC High School). The Science teacher (s) mentoring the project will receive a $1000 stipend. Remember that MMC science faculty will be available for advice during the application process if requested.

The project could begin as early as January 2011 but must be completed by July 30, 2011. Upper level science undergraduates are available to mentor the high school students during the implementation of the specific projects. Additional funds are available to defray travel costs to MMC, as participants may need to meet with faculty or use facilities, equipment or instrumentation at MMC. For additional information see attached document describing the program in detail (Appendix B). Sample project ideas can be found in Appendix C.

The deadline for Request for Proposals has passed.
