Placement Test

This 60-minute examination tests a student's ability to compose a short essay on a specific reading and to address questions from the reading.

Qualified professionals score essays for basic paragraph and sentence structure, thesis, and ability to reason logically with limited supporting detail. The online exam also tests for basic academic competence in reading at the college level.
This online placement exam consists of three possible sections: arithmetic, elementary algebra, and college math. The difficulty of the questions is quickly and automatically adapted to the capability of the individual student.

The Arithmetic section measures ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and solve problems, the Elementary Algebra test measures ability to perform basic algebraic operation and understand elementary algebraic concepts, and the College-Level Mathematics measures ability to solve problems involving college-level mathematics concepts.

College-Wide Rules Regarding Placement Tests

  • The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 provides safeguards against the misuse of student records and limits access to these records, and at the same time grants college students the right of access to certain specified records concerning them maintained by the institution. Therefore, no member of the Academic Advancement staff will give test results over the phone. And, no staff member of the Center will discuss or release any information concerning test scores to a parent or guardian.
  • Members of the Center will not give exam scores to students. Placement scores are reported on Colleague. Students should see their academic or faculty advisor for scores.
  • The exams are scored by the Center for Academic Advancement and posted on-line to directors and advisors throughout the College. After scores have been posted, students may register for English and Math classes.
  • In compliance with federal laws, if a student has a learning disability and needs special accommodation for testing, this needs to be documented prior to the examination. If disabilities are documented beforehand, Academic Advancement will arrange to secure a testing environment suited to the student's needs. Disabilities cannot factor into student's testing after the exam has been given.
  • There is no opportunity to re-take the Placement Examination.
