What Is HEOP?

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) is a New York State funded program that supports five years of undergraduate study. It is specifically designed for students who meet both the educational and economic guidelines established by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

HEOP provides supportive services and supplementary financial assistance to students who demonstrate potential for academic success. HEOP has been an integral part of Marymount Manhattan College since 1969.

Who is Eligible for HEOP?

In order to be eligible for benefits under the Higher Education Opportunity Program, a student must:

Meet both the educational and economic guidelines established by the NYSED.
Be a graduate of a high school approved and accredited by the NYSED, have a New York State Equivalency Diploma, or possess an Armed Forces Equivalency Diploma.
Offer proven potential for and an eagerness to succeed in a post-secondary program.
Be a New York State resident for at least 12 months prior to enrollment.

HEOP at Marymount

The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at Marymount Manhattan College provides supportive services to all incoming pre-freshman and continuing students enrolled in the program. Supportive services include academic, career, financial aid, and social services counseling, tutorial services, specialized academic workshops, and a pre-freshman summer program.

The Pre-Freshman Summer Program provides a six-week academic and social orientation for incoming students. The academic program emphasizes strengthening writing and math skills and provides students with a transition to college level studies. The curriculum also includes cultural trips, guest speakers, and workshops in library research. Along with developmental courses in writing and math, students enrolled in the program will also have the opportunity to attend a third academic class which allows the student to gain three credits before the fall semester even begins.

What Do I Need to Apply?

All income documentation must be submitted: A) Copies of recent tax returns; B) Letter from Public Assistance stating yearly benefits and names of those on the Public Assistance budget; C) Statements from Social Security stating yearly benefits for each member of the household receiving Social Security benefits.
If no tax return was filed, a letter from the IRS stating "No Tax
Return was Filed" must be presented. If unemployment benefits were received, a statement of total yearly benefits must be submitted.
A high school transcript or a copy of G.E.D. scores must be forwarded to the H.E.O.P. office.
Completed and signed FAFSA and signed Express TAP Application.
A personal interview is required of all applicants and is the final step in the application process.

Economic Eligibility Criteria
for Opportunity Programs

A student is considered economically disadvantaged if:

He or she is a member of a household supported by one member with a total annual income, which does not exceed the amount set forth in the following table.

OR
The household is supported solely by one member who works for two or more employers with a total annual income that does not exceed the amount set forth in the following table by more than $1,800.

OR

The household is supported by more than one worker or that worker is the sole support of a one-parent family with a total annual income which does not exceed the amount set forth in the following table by more than $4,800.
