The Student/Advisor Relationship
Both students and advisors must assume equal responsibility in the advising process.
Students have the responsibility to:
- Read the college catalogue carefully
- Be familiar with degree programs and requirements at the college
- Make and keep appointments and call if it is necessary to cancel
- Come with specific questions
- Be prepared with the necessary materials (forms, class and work schedules)
- Develop a self-awareness of your academic progress
- Maintain a file of all college related paperwork i.e. financial statements, transcripts, Core/Shared Curriculum and Major requirements, add/drop forms etc.
- Follow through on advisor recommendations
- Accept ultimate responsibility for their decisions
- Make use of all resources on campus
Your Faculty Advisor's responsibilities include:
- Being knowledgeable about college requirements, policies and procedures
- Maintaining adequate office hours throughout the semester
- Keeping appointments and calling the student if it is necessary to cancel
- Providing sound academic advice
- Recognizing the limitations of their positions and being familiar with the college's resources in order to make appropriate referrals
- Serving as a sounding board
- Helping you choose suitable courses
- Helping you select a major and clarify your long-range plans
When to see an advisor
- To discuss any problems that affect your academic performance
- To select courses for the upcoming semester (your advisor's signature is required on your course registration form)
- To add or drop courses during registration
- To discuss withdrawal from a course
- To help work through the process of declaring a major field of study
- To discuss changes in major, the addition of a minor, or the addition of a certificate program
- To consider study abroad, internship and career options
- To discuss academic policies and procedures for which you require clarification
- To explore the possibility of graduate study
