The Student/Advisor Relationship

Both students and advisors must assume equal responsibility in the advising process.

Students have the responsibility to:
  1. Read the college catalogue carefully
  2. Be familiar with degree programs and requirements at the college
  3. Make and keep appointments and call if it is necessary to cancel
  4. Come with specific questions
  5. Be prepared with the necessary materials (forms, class and work schedules)
  6. Develop a self-awareness of your academic progress
  7. Maintain a file of all college related paperwork i.e. financial statements, transcripts, Core/Shared Curriculum and Major requirements, add/drop forms etc.
  8. Follow through on advisor recommendations
  9. Accept ultimate responsibility for their decisions
  10. Make use of all resources on campus
Your Faculty Advisor's responsibilities include:
  1. Being knowledgeable about college requirements, policies and procedures
  2. Maintaining adequate office hours throughout the semester
  3. Keeping appointments and calling the student if it is necessary to cancel
  4. Providing sound academic advice
  5. Recognizing the limitations of their positions and being familiar with the college's resources in order to make appropriate referrals
  6. Serving as a sounding board
  7. Helping you choose suitable courses
  8. Helping you select a major and clarify your long-range plans
When to see an advisor
  1. To discuss any problems that affect your academic performance
  2. To select courses for the upcoming semester (your advisor's signature is required on your course registration form)
  3. To add or drop courses during registration
  4. To discuss withdrawal from a course
  5. To help work through the process of declaring a major field of study
  6. To discuss changes in major, the addition of a minor, or the addition of a certificate program
  7. To consider study abroad, internship and career options
  8. To discuss academic policies and procedures for which you require clarification
  9. To explore the possibility of graduate study
